Cable & Wireless Use Information From ti to Help Smash World Record

Cable & Wireless, sponsors of the power boat that has just smashed the around-the-world record by eight days, are using information form Technical Indexes to make sure they stay up-to-date with the latest regulations and legislation.

The £2 million British designed power boat ‘Cable & Wireless Adventurer’, built in Southampton by Vosper Thornycroft, another Technical Indexes customer, easily beat the previous record for circumnavigating the globe set by the American submarine USS Triton in 1960.

The power boat cruised into Gibraltar after 74 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes at sea, having covered 24,485 miles and stops at 15 ports during its clockwise round the world trip.

Cable & Wireless rely on two key products from Technical Indexes, BSI British Standards – Electronics & Aerospace and Computer & Communications Technology Documents.

Supplied in easy to use CD-ROM format, Cable & Wireless use the information to keep up to date with the latest regulatory changes and industry data, and to maintain an up to date electronic library of manufacturers’ products.

Cable & Wireless Communications Technical Librarian, Terri Landmann, based at the Technical Information Unit, Bracknell, said: " Having vital data from Technical Indexes in CD-ROM format saves us considerable time by providing our engineers with instant access to the information they require".

"Engineers can request a copy of the standard they need by telephone, e-mail or by personal visit to the library. We can then print out the relevant section they need in high quality laser format.

Since standards can and do change, we insist engineers return their print-out to the library within one month where it is then destroyed. This ensures that Cable & Wireless engineers always work with the latest standards and the most up-to-date information".

With help from Technical Indexes, Cable & Wireless maintain their market leading position in global communications by having the right information at the right time to help cut cycle times, eliminate re-work and react more quickly to market demands, contract opportunities and regulatory change.

Technical Indexes is a cutting edge provider of comprehensive, technical data, standards, regulations, product and supplier information to commerce and industry worldwide. The only company of its type with ISO 9002 quality accreditation, more than 6,000 customers in the UK alone retain their competitive edge by referring to several million pages of vital information supplied by ti.
